Umbosersky Mine: Ruins in the Lovozero Tundra

Once, life thrived here in the vast halls of the Lovozero tundra. Day and night, the Umbosersky mine yielded a wealth of minerals—some of which were found and extracted only at this very site. But for reasons lost to time, the shafts were flooded, and all operations were moved to the nearby Karnasurt mine.

Time, vandals, and metal scavengers have played their part. Today, the traveler can witness the stark grandeur of desolation and human futility set against the mesmerizing backdrop of mountain landscapes. And truth be told, such scenery is very much to our taste.

The internet teems with freshly invented tales of anomalies and paranormal events said to lurk here. Most of these stories aren’t worth a rusty kopek—but standing amid these ruins in the mountains, one’s imagination easily conjures the vision of a moonlit encounter with the Sikhirtya(Sikhirtya — a mythical northern people, said to be small in stature and gifted with magical abilities. They once lived alongside humans, but later retreated beneath the earth) or the Master of the Mountain.
