Someone who has escaped the rusalki, even if he has only seen or heard them from afar, does not always remain unpunished. One person acquires the habit of laughing for no reason and uncontrollably; another twists and contorts while walking, as if his body had come loose, and makes grimaces; in another, one sense or another is affected, most often hearing. It is noteworthy that the stronger the victim’s nature, the more striking the organic damage will be, and a person cannot overcome it for the rest of his life.

From N. Ya. Nikiforovsky’s book Unclean Spirits.

The photo shows the wooden Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Novaya Osinovka, in the Atkarsky District of Saratov Region, built without a single nail, which is a rarity for these places. The last local priest, Father Mikhail, disappeared in an unknown direction in the 1930s, and the church itself was turned into a grain storehouse.
