Konoval once gave a woman a small pouch and said: “Run to the crossroads, and you will find wealth.” At midnight she went there with the pouch — and the crossroads were full of devils. “Mother, mother, mother, we are with you, we are with you, we are with you,” they said, and she brought a whole legion of them back to her home. After that, the woman lost her mind and began running, hair disheveled, toward the forest whenever the villagers gathered to go to church.
This is a folk tale (bylichka) from the Novgorod region, recorded in T. Shchepanskaya’s book “The Culture of the Road.”
The photographs show the ruins of the Church of the Meeting of the Lord (Sretenie Gospodne) in the village of Gornoye Sholtozero.
